In Japanese, Mame translates to "bean," a fitting name for this astonishingly tiny Himitsu-bako. Measuring just 4.3 cm in length, it is currently the smallest puzzle box produced in the Hakone region. It is handcrafted entirely from eco-friendly natural wood by master artisan Hiroyuki Oka (Oka Craft), who brings over 20 years of woodworking expertise to this micro-brainteaser.
The exterior design is an aesthetic triumph. The top panel features a solid hexagon wood mosaic that creates a captivating three-dimensional optical illusion. The side panels are wrapped in traditional Yosegi-zaiku marquetry. Because of the artisanal process, the exact geometric pattern on the sides varies slightly from box to box, making yours completely unique.
Do not let its pocket size fool you. Securing the tiny internal compartment is a complex mechanism involving 4 sliding panels. Solving the box requires a rigid, sequential 18-step process. Master Oka’s meticulous construction ensures that every tiny wooden rail glides with buttery smoothness, without the need for external slide keys.
