A truly heartwarming creation designed by craftsman Shou Sugimoto in June 2026. Topped with an adorable carved wooden dog, this puzzle box features a clever trick inspired by a very personal and sweet memory.
The backstory of this puzzle box is incredibly charming. In the spring of 2025, Shou Sugimoto welcomed a new puppy into his home. He named her "Komame", which translates to "little bean" in Japanese. He playfully named her after his wife's parents' dog, "Azuki", which means "red bean".
Completely smitten with his new pet, the craftsman turned her into the muse for this Karakuri box. The mechanical trick required to open the box is not just a random sequence; it actually represents a specific, cute action that Komame used to do when she was just a puppy. Solving the puzzle brings that sweet memory to life.
To capture the puppy's likeness, Sugimoto utilized a rich variety of natural woods (Japanese walnut, Walnut, Shiuri cherry, Magnolia, Maple, and Wenge). This blend creates a beautifully colored, unpainted finish. Hidden beneath the puppy is a square storage compartment. As the craftsman himself says, "I hope you love her too."
