Crafted in June 2025, the "Floating" Karakuri box by Yoh Kakuda is a poetic masterpiece. Available now in very good pre-owned condition, it beautifully captures the motif of a Tundra swan gliding effortlessly on the water. Kakuda playfully challenges the myth that waterfowl paddle frantically beneath the surface; this swan's feet are just as relaxed as its elegant exterior.
This relaxation is the key to the mystery. Opening this trick box requires you to interact with the swan's tranquil nature. The puzzle features two distinct storage spaces. Curiously, the craftsman explicitly recommends putting nothing in the first compartment. Is it a mechanical decoy? Does the empty space allow the "relaxed feet" to move? Unlocking the second compartment will reveal the truth.
The swan is brought to life using a harmonious blend of Japanese woods, including Mizuki (Dogwood), Shiuri cherry, Japanese Torreya, Wenge, and Chanchin. It is a stunning display piece that hides a delightful secret.
