East Meets West in Marquetry

The visual storytelling of this Himitsu-bako is truly unique. The main panel features a beautiful Zougan (figurative marquetry) scene of a Maiko (apprentice Geisha) gazing from the shores of lake Ashi at the majestic Mount Fuji. Turn the box over, and you are greeted by an unexpected, charming motif of two Scottish Terriers. This deliberate inclusion of Western imagery makes this box a rare and captivating artifact of Japan's mid-century export era.

Attributed to the Yamanaka Workshop

Judging by the sophisticated woven-checkerboard pattern on the side panels and the precise craftsmanship, this masterpiece is heavily attributed to the legendary Yamanaka workshop (red Hanko). What sets this specific piece apart is its immaculate preservation. The natural woods have retained their original luster and structural integrity, looking as though they were crafted yesterday.

The Pristine 21-Step Enigma

Because it was lovingly stored, the internal mechanisms have been completely protected from the elements. Unlocking the hidden compartment requires a logical, uninterrupted sequence of 21 sliding steps. The wooden panels glide with a satisfying, buttery smoothness that provides a flawless tactile experience for the solver.
