Storytelling in Wood
The true visual draw of this piece is found in its Zougan marquetry. Rather than repeating geometric patterns, the main panels act as a canvas. The front reveals a serene scene of a small boat on a lake with the iconic Mount Fuji in the background. Turn it around, and you are met with two lively traditional Japanese travelers making their journey. Crafted by piecing together various natural wood grains, it is a picturesque work of art that rewards close inspection.
The Perfect Mental Warm-Up (7 Steps)
For those looking to experience the ingenuity of Japanese secret boxes, this model is an ideal starting point. The internal mechanism demands a logical sequence of 7 sliding movements. It strikes a perfect balance—offering the satisfying, tactile intrigue of a mechanical puzzle without the overwhelming difficulty of more complex models. The wooden rails slide with impressive smoothness.
A Kiss of Sun
Because it is crafted entirely from raw, natural wood, this puzzle box responds to its environment over time. One of the side panels shows a gentle fading from past exposure to sunlight. This subtle lightening of the woven wood pattern is not a flaw; it is the authentic mark of a natural material gracefully interacting with light, ensuring your specific box has its own unique patina.
