A beautiful celebration of Japanese nature. This substantial 5 Sun secret box provides an approachable 10-step challenge, elevated by exceptionally sweet figurative marquetry.
Note: This pre-owned item has been impeccably preserved in "like new" condition and comes complete with its original box and solution manual.
The primary allure of this Himitsu-bako lies in its delicate Zougan (figurative marquetry). It depicts a classic theme in Japanese art: the arrival of spring. One side features warm-toned Plum blossoms (Ume) on a branch, while the reverse side reveals a charming little bird (Mejiro) perched among light-petaled blossoms. It is a stunning visual narrative crafted purely from unpainted natural wood.
To perfectly highlight these naturalistic scenes, the artisans applied the geometric Ichimatsu (classic Japanese checkerboard) pattern to the sides and ends of the box. The rhythmic alternation of light and dark woods creates a brilliant visual frame, contrasting beautifully with the organic floral panels. This attention to detail is a hallmark of pieces selected by the historic Izumiya shop.
Typically, the larger 5 Sun format is reserved for highly complex internal mechanisms. This piece is a wonderful exception, offering a straightforward 10-step opening sequence. It is the perfect puzzle box for beginners who want to experience the rewarding solving process while enjoying the satisfying tactile feedback and commanding visual presence of a larger box.
